Deposit and loss limits: how they work, and where they bind
The only control on this site that works before anything has gone wrong.
The three kinds
A deposit limit caps what you can put in over a period. A loss limit caps what you can lose net, which is stricter and more useful — it accounts for money you win and then stake again. A time limit caps how long a session runs.
A loss limit is the one most players skip and the one that most closely matches what people actually mean when they set a budget.
Why tightening is instant and loosening is delayed
Every registered operator must apply a limit reduction immediately, and must delay an increase. That asymmetry is the whole design: it puts a gap between an impulse and its consequence.
It also means there is no cost to setting a limit lower than you think you need. If you were wrong, the correction takes a few days. If you were right, the limit was doing something.
Set them on the first day
On the day you open an account, while the decision is abstract and costs you nothing. A limit chosen on a quiet afternoon is a decision made by the version of you that is thinking clearly, and it is enforced later by a system that will not negotiate.
Setting one in the middle of a difficult session is far better than nothing, and considerably harder to do.
What good limit tooling looks like
Granularity and reachability. A site offering a single monthly deposit cap has technically complied. One offering daily, weekly and monthly caps across deposits, losses and time, reachable in two taps from the account screen and available in the mobile app rather than only on desktop, has actually helped.
That difference is worth several points inside our safer-gambling criterion, and it is visible on every operator review.
Two settings most players never find
A reality check interrupts play at an interval you choose and states how long you have been playing. Sessions expand quietly; a fifteen-minute prompt is a surprisingly effective correction.
A withdrawal reversal lock stops a requested withdrawal being pulled back into your balance during a pending period. Operators present reversibility as flexibility; for anyone trying to stop it is the opposite. Turning it off permanently is one of the most useful settings on any casino account.
What limits cannot do
They apply to one operator. A deposit cap at one site does nothing about opening an account at another, which is why self-exclusion carries more weight in our scoring than limit quality does.
And they are not advice about what your limit should be. That depends on your circumstances, and if the question feels difficult to answer, that is itself worth discussing with one of the services on our responsible gambling page.
Deposit and loss limits, answered
What is the difference between a deposit limit and a loss limit?
A deposit limit caps what you put in; a loss limit caps what you lose net, accounting for winnings you stake again. The loss limit is stricter and closer to what most people mean by a budget.
Can I lower a limit immediately?
Yes. Reductions take effect at once. Increases carry a deliberate delay, which is the mechanism that makes limits work.
How long does it take to raise a limit?
It varies by operator and framework, but a delay is required rather than optional. Treat it as days rather than minutes.
Do all Canadian casinos offer limits?
Registered operators in Ontario and Alberta must. Offshore operators generally do, with wide variation in how granular the tools are and how easy they are to find.
What is a reality check?
A prompt at an interval you choose telling you how long you have been playing. It is one of the most effective settings available and one of the least used.
Should I turn off withdrawal reversal?
If you are at all concerned about your play, yes. A reversible withdrawal keeps money you decided to remove one tap from being in play again.
