Self-exclusion in Canada: which provinces bind every operator

What self-exclusion actually is

A request that operators refuse you service for a set period. Once it is in place the operator is obliged to enforce it, which is what separates it from a personal resolution: it works at the moment you would otherwise change your mind.

How much it is worth depends entirely on how many operators it binds, and that is a matter of provincial law rather than operator goodwill.

Ontario and Alberta: one enrolment, whole market

Both provinces run a binding province-wide register. You enrol once and every registered operator must refuse you — including sites you have never visited and had not heard of when you enrolled. Ontario's is branded BetGuard, and it covers every site in the regulated market including the government's own. You choose a term of six months, one year, five years or a length you set yourself, and you do it in one place rather than site by site.

This is the single strongest player-protection mechanism in Canadian online gambling, and it is why our safer-gambling criterion can only reach full marks in these two provinces.

Everywhere else: one site at a time

In the other eleven provinces and territories there is no register binding commercial operators. An exclusion applies to the single site you set it on.

The problem is not that operator-level exclusion fails — most operators honour it properly. The problem is that it does nothing about the next site, and the next site is a search away at the exact moment you are least likely to be choosing carefully. A provincial site such as PlayNow or Espacejeux will have its own programme covering its own platform, and nothing beyond it.

How to set one up

Through the provincial programme where one exists, or through each operator's responsible-gambling section where it does not. Expect to choose a duration, and expect it to be difficult or impossible to shorten once set — that inflexibility is the feature.

Do it before you need it. An exclusion arranged calmly is worth far more than one attempted at two in the morning, and the version of you making the calm decision is the one you want in charge.

Online and land-based are separate

Even under the same regulator, online and land-based exclusion are generally administered through different channels. An online exclusion that leaves a physical venue open is half a decision.

If you are stepping back from gambling rather than from one website, ask about both routes explicitly.

Smaller steps that are not exclusion

A cooling-off period locks an account for a short window without the commitment of a full exclusion — the right tool for a bad evening. Deposit and loss limits work continuously rather than absolutely. A reality check interrupts play and tells you how long you have been going.
